Today, there are two broad classes of agricultural products: livestock and food. Livestock farming has become a major industry in some countries. Food manufacturing is mostly in supply chains that link manufacturers of raw materials to processors to marketers to distributors.

Food manufacturing has become an important component of agricultural products as more people than ever before, depend on it for their daily meals. People in developing countries now rely on crops, fish, fruit, meat and vegetables to meet their basic nutritional needs. In the mid-1990s, there was a major increase in agricultural product exports from developed countries. An increasing demand for good quality meat combined with the small retail margins in many countries gave rise to a wide variety of large meat processing units.

As new growth industries in developing countries were developed, there was a substantial shift from agricultural products to manufactured food. Grain, meat and dairy products are still used to make processed food products, but they are increasingly used in place of or in addition to human consumption in developing countries.

These companies have dominated the production and marketing of animal feed, feed for other animals, bovine growth hormones, animal byproducts, protein, feed supplements, soya oil, chemicals and co-products, synthetic fertilizers, ingredients and other agricultural supplies.
